Giant Hogweed Set To Destroy WNY

"Bigplanto-Ohfuckno!"

If it’s not Zebra Mussels, Asian Carp, Purple LoosestrifeEmerald Ash Borer Beetles, or Carl Paladino,  then the next thing that threatens to destroy us all in WNY is Heracleum Mantegazzianum, otherwise known as Giant Hogweed

"Heil Hogweed!" some will blindly follow this plant to destroy life as we know it...

“Heil Hogweed!” some will blindly follow this plant to destroy life as we know it. And literally “blindly” in some cases…

Spreading across the area comes this invasive species, which can grow from about 6 or 7 feet to, in some cases, 23 feet tall. Exposure to the sap of phototoxic plant can cause phytophotodermatitis, a violent allergic reaction which makes one’s skin hypersensitive to ultraviolet light. You may be strolling along in and come in contact with a plant that looks like regular Hogweed (except it’s honking huge. We’re talking Fuccillo HUGE) with a top that resembles Queen Ann’s lace. Then the next thing you know you have bruise-like skin coloration, painful blisters, scarring and such. But don’t worry, you may not have long to look at your now horrible skin, as BAM! you’re now blind!

And it’s spreading…

New York State officials have declared this week Invasive Species Awareness Week to bring attention to the doom that will soon surround us.

Suffice to say, if you see one, don’t touch it. What does it look like? Visit the NYS Dept. of Transportation for identification tips, and how to report it.

A giant plant that can harm humans?! Blindness?! Sounds like something out of “The Day of the Triffids”

Once again, we are all doomed…

Do NOT attempt to eat the Giant Hogweed...
